Developed via a highly successful Kickstarter drive, the Oculus Rift 3D Virtual Reality headset is shaping up to be a highly coveted piece of kit. Sadly, the proposed ship date of December 2012 has now been put back to March 2013.
The reason for this, quite simply, is that the response to the headset has been phenomenal, and the developers are not really set up to mass-market the device – yet!
On their Kickstarter page, they explain how they were “blown away by the overwhelming response” to the Kickstarter drive, explaining how they initially only expected to sell “a few hundred kits”. They were funded to the tune of a staggering $2.5 million in contributions, more than ten times their goal.
Their awesome Kickstarter campaign ended on Sept. 1, and they have stated that producing the 7500 kits in the time left would be impossible, particularly given that it would take at least 90 days to set up a factory where they could manufacture the Oculus Rift.
Another minor problem arose due to having to alter production due to their favoured 5.6 inch screen being discontinued. They have now chosen a different 7″ sreen which will make the whole thing slightly
heavier.
The developers hope to get all of the kits out between March and April, with a consumer version not yet announced, but hopefully in the pipeline. They are also working with Epic Games and Unity to integrate
their kit into the free versions of Unreal Engine 3 and Unity, which is very exciting.
“We want to thank everyone for their patience and support,” the developers said. “Know that we’re pouring our hearts into this project.”
