New Character Revealed for Dead island: Riptide and He's a... Cook? The success of Techland’s Dead Island, released in 2010, still boggles the minds of many but, despite some horrendous bugs, dodgy voice-acting, patchy graphics and occasionally hit-and-miss gameplay, you just can’t argue with popularity. Praised for its cooperative multiplayer mode, lush tropical island setting and tongue-in-cheek humour, it garnered a cult following and has spawned, as such games will, a brand new sequel in Riptide.

Having survived the zombie horror plaguing the isle of Banoi, the original four protagonists (Chinese agent Mei, rap star Sam B, ex-quarterback Logan and security specialist Purna) find themselves SNAFU on Palanai, an island in the same archipelago, when their chopper crashes during an intense storm.

The centre of Palanai is the town of Henderson, a once-thriving settlement home to the wealthy elite and all manner of eco-tourists, but now heavily-flooded and half-destroyed by the monsoon. The survivors will often need to adapt to dynamic weather conditions and seek higher ground to escape the horrors lurking beneath the flood tides.

Luckily, four will become five with the addition of a brand new survivor: John Morgan is a cook aboard a US Navy ship who finds himself stranded on Palanai, and brings with him a unique skill-set thanks to his extensive military training. It will come in handy too, as you’ll now need to construct traps and defences to save yourself and others from a host of new zombie mutations and environmental dangers.
