Abe’s Oddysee HD Becomes New N’ Tasty at Eurogamer Expo
Yesterday, Oddworld Inhabitants and Just Add Water revealed that the much talked about HD remake of 1997’s PS One classic Abe’s Oddysee, has a proper name and a sceduled release window. Just Add Water developer Stuart Gilray and founder of Oddworld, Lorne Lanning, announced that the new title for the game would be Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee New N’ Tasty and it will be coming to PlayStation 3, PS Vita, PC and Xbox 360 in Autumn 2013.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Gilray said that he was against using the term “HD” in the title as it evokes the sense of a game getting a new lick of paint for modern day consoles. New N’ Tasty is being built from the ground up. For instance, Gilray mentioned that the title is being created in 3D, but will still play just like you remembered. Lighting is now more dynamic, the cutscenes will use the game’s engine as opposed to the FMV sequences from the original and the camera has been re-done to be more free-flowing than the original’s more static approach.
When talking about the camera, Gilray said “In the original game you looked through a screen flip and it was like, ah! You run away or you’re dead. You had to make your decision before you went through the screen flip in the original game. But with this, because you can see farther in front of you, you can make that change in your gameplay there and then without having to go, I’ve died, I have to go back to the check point and re-do it.”
Some of the puzzles have been made “friendlier to gamers” and a quick save has been implemented. The majority of the game will be staying the same, but there have been a few changes here and there to bring Abe up to modern day gaming.
You can check out a Developer Session that took place at Eurogamer Expo (and starts at about 14:47 in the video) where you can see some early footage of Abe’s comeback. It’s not necessarily a new game, but still, a rebuilt Abe’s Oddysee sounds delightful.
