A Week in Gaming: 23/01/2012 – 27/01/2012
It’s Friday, which can only mean that it’s time for another installment of the Oscar-nominated A Week in Gaming! Well, when I say Oscar-nominated I actually mean that someone called Oscar nominated A Week in Gaming for something. And when I say someone, I actually mean my teddy bear. But enough about that, let’s get cracking with this week’s look at the very best of GodisaGeek.
REVIEWS
I’ve got a brilliant selection of reviews to share with you this week, including reviews of one highly anticipated game and one highly anticipated piece of tech. If you enjoy what you read here and want more, then simply head over to our Review section.
Scarygirl
First up this week is Sean, who reviewed the Xbox LIVE Arcade and PSN title Scarygirl. He found the game to be a “super little title” with a “well balanced learning curve”, which combines to form a “superb way to kick off your digital purchasing for 2012”.
Find all of Sean’s review here. You can also check out the first 15 minutes of the game below.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
The Force was strong with Martin this week as he ventured deep into a galaxy far, far away in order to review the newest MMO to hit the market, Star Wars: The Old Republic. He thought that the “launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic has been a huge success”, and whilst there are some problems with the title, Martin is confident that “BioWare will do their best” to iron out the bugs and make this “the game that we all want to play”.
You can read all of Martin’s review right here.
PlayStation Vita
The European launch of the PlayStation Vita is almost upon us, and Adam was lucky enough to get his hands on one to be able to provide us with his review of the device. He thought that the Vita is an “astonishing handheld console”, one that offers “something for absolutely every potential user” and if you “love video games then you’d be absolutely mad not to make the investment”.
Read Adam’s full review of Sony’s PlayStation Vita here, or check out one of our First Look videos of the console below.
Mobile Monday
Finally this week, Martin was on hand to pass his judgement on another batch of mobile games in this week’s Mobile Monday.
This weeks titles included: Star Marine! Infinite Ammo, which if you are a “fan of the 8-bit generation” then you “certainly should pick up” this game; Greedy Penguins, which Martin thinks is a “game that everybody should have in their gaming library”; Doodle Devil, a title that isn’t “going to be everyone’s cup of tea”; and finally Chuck’s Challenge, “an extremely enjoyable environmental puzzle game”.
You can read Martin’s full review of each title, as well as links to the App Store for each game, in this week’s edition of Mobile Monday.

New Darksiders II Screenshots Released
The original Darksiders was something of a pleasant surprise to some people, and this sequel from developer Vigil Games (the studio behind the original) is shaping up quite nicely as well.
Rumour: Are Microsoft Planning to Drop their Microsoft Points?
I don’t like Microsoft Points, so the news that they may be phased out by the end of this year definitely brings a smile to my face.
Resident Evil 6: More Screenshots and Artwork Released
Following last weeks trailer annoucing the game to the World, Capcom have released some more images for their upcoming action horror title.
New Expansion For The Lord of the Rings Online This Autumn

Ryder White DLC Trailer for Dead Island
Behind every zombie there’s usually a horde of more zombies. But behind them there lies an evil villian who unleashed the undead horde upon the World. In this new DLC for Dead Island, you get to play as that villian.

ARTICLES
This week’s collection of articles features a two lovely First Looks, one Geek in the Tubes, and a couple of fantastic previews to round things off.
First up, we have a 12 minute First Look at the latest game from Atlus, the rather intriguing Catherine, which you can see below.
Our second First Look is a 45 minute look at the three titles in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, complete with commentary from Adam and Tony.
This month’s edition of Geek in the Tubes was brought to you by none other than myself, and for this edition I decided to find some videos that consisted of real life videogames. From crazy Mario Kart antics to amazing fan-made trailers, you’ll be amazed at the lengths some people go to to replicate videogames in the real world. Check out all of the videos in this month’s Geek in the Tubes.
Finally this week we have two fantastic previews for you. Firstly, Rik was on-hand to provide us with a preview of Ubisoft’s latest entry in their Ghost Recon series, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Meanwhile Martin tried his hand at town planning, and was able to produce a preview of the newest game from developer Jagex, 8 Realms.
THE GODISAGEEK PODCAST NETWORK
The GodisaGeek Podcast Network continued it’s march to dominate the podcast airwaves this week, with another three stellar shows from each of our podcasts that make up the Network.
Firstly, there was episode 3 of the Godcast. In this week’s show, Adam tried his hand at reproducing Colm’s accent. I think I’ll let you be the judge of how successful he is.
Episode 3 of Saint & Greensie, titled “The Poor Man’s James Corden”, provided us with more laughs brought forth by this comedy duo.
And finally, Ding! reached level 3 after some hard after-hours grinding by the team. If you are at all curious about MMO’s, the Ding! is the podcast for you.
And that’s your lot for this week’s BAFTA-nominated A Week in Gaming. I shall be back next week, so until then I’d like to thank everyone who was involved in the making of this article and I look forward to seeing them again when we make the sequel.
Don’t forget, if you want to add your thoughts about anything covered in this week’s article then you can leave us a comment below, or you can Tweet us, write on our Facebook Wall, or post a message in our Forums.
Alex Wozniak
Hello! I'm Alex Wozniak and I'm a writer here at GodisaGeek. I've been gaming ever since my cousin gifted me an Amiga 500 at the tender age of 3 (or was it 4?) and I haven't looked back since. Currently, I'm enjoying playing games on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DSi.
Apart from gaming I enjoy watching Formula 1, snooker, and darts, though I doubt I'll ever enjoy golf, cricket, or lawn bowls. I also support both Bradford City AFC and Bradford Bulls, but at times that support can be thoroughly tested.
If you want to get in touch you can email me at alex[at]godisageek[dot]com, or send a tweet to @Antholex.
You can find more of my ramblings and musings about videogames over on my blog, the Anthology of Interest.
