Sony Confirms PSN Pass Scheme
Sony has today confirmed that it will be running a PSN Pass programme to unlock online content with its latest games. The service, similar to EA’s online pass, is set to debut with the release of Resistance 3 in September.
The news first broke on German website Konsolentreff, where a Resistance 3 PlayStation 3 bundle displayed the PSN Pass logo. Responding to requests to comment, Sony confirmed the existence of the service to IGN, and those who buy Resistance 3, will be required to input an access code to make use of online features. This initiative “allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.” Said Sony.
“We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities,” said a Sony spokesperson “This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.”
While no pricing was announced, it would appear that Sony is following the likes of EA and Codemasters in requiring a pass to play online. Players who buy pre-owned will need to purchase a new code from the PSN store. How much will this cost? We don’t know yet, Sony has said it will reveal the finer details at a later date.
