Green Lantern: Rise Of The Manhunters Detailed

In brightest day, in blackest night …

… Warner Bros will make sure that they release a game tie-in for the new Green Lantern movie.

Called Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, the game sees the player control Hal Jordan and his magical ring. Hmm. “Carry On” puns about the source of Jordan’s powers aside, the significant challenge of realising a super hero who can create anything he imagines falls to Double Helix Games (for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions) and Griptonite Games (Nintendo Wii, DS and 3DS).

In all versions, players are said to be able to create a variety of ring constructs, fly though space and use the power ring to build and weapons that can be used against the Manhunters. Examples of the ring constructs available to players are gatling guns and giant fists which can all be chained together into lengthy combos.

The game will feature 3D visuals, not just on the 3DS but also on the PS3 and Xbox 360l. The PS3 and Xbox 360 3D will be available in two forms; anaglyphic 3D usable on any standard TV with the game’s included 3D glasses and stereoscopic 3D for those lucky folks with proper 3DTVs.

As if 3D graphics weren’t enough of a treat for Xbox 360 and PS3 owners they will also get the old school treat of seamless drop-in/drop-out co op play, with player two able to control Hal Jordan’s fellow Green Lantern, Sinestro. The cherry on the cake for those jammy PS3 and Xbox 360 owners will get to listen to the dulcet tones of Ryan Reynolds who reprises his role as Hal Jordan and voices the character in the game.

Both Double Helix Games and Griptonite Games have a mixed track record when developing games and history tells us that getting superhero games right is no picnic. Let’s hope that the developers hit the nail on the head and the game lives up to the heritage of the comics.

All versions of the game will be released on June 10th, 2011
