Turtle Rock Studios has announced that it is returning to the co-op zombie FPS genre that it pioneered with Left 4 Dead, with its new game, Back 4 Blood. Teaming up with publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Turtle Rock is designing this game to marry “the best of what made the co-op zombie shooter so successful with new features and state-of-the-art technology.”
“It’s hard to overstate what an awesome opportunity this is. We get to return to a genre that was born in our studio with over ten years of additional experience and zombie ideas racked up in our brains,” said Chris Ashton, Co-founder and Design Director, Turtle Rock Studios. “We also have some of the best teammates in the business at WBIE who understand our development process and are equally committed to our player-first mentality. We love being able to announce, so we can start working with the community right away.”
This is all fantastic news, really. Left 4 Dead 3 may never happen, but with the creators of the originals working on a new game in the genre, we may not need that sequel after all.
What is perhaps the most interesting thing about this announcement however, is that it is being touted as a “next-gen co-operative zombie FPS,” so it’s looking like a release for the next Xbox and PlayStation, and may mean a lengthy wait.
