Epic Games’ take on the Battle Royale game Fortnite Battle Royale has amassed a 40 million player base, and is updating the map in celebration.
Available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, the spin off of Fortnite was the first real competitor to Player Unknown’s Battle Grounds, and as well as passing 40 million individual players the game passed the 2 million simultaneous player milestone this last weekend.
“Some people are saying we could be the biggest and best-played game [full stop] in the western world.” Said lead systems designer Eric Williamson.
The game now sees its map getting a real overhaul, with new city areas with high-rise buildings and mine areas allowing you to go underground, the game is relishing in verticality and making full use of available 3D space. You can see the original map and its update below.
These changes have been made possible with the implementation of level streaming, meaning that the game can significantly scale the quality of areas nearby while downgrading what is far away, giving the game more resources to handle the action close to the player.
I haven’t had the chance to play this yet, but I’m beginning to think that I might want to get into this.
