Nintendo’s profits tumble 36% in third fiscal quarter
Nintendo published their financial results for the third quarter of its fiscal year, from October 1 to December 31, 2015.
The results show that profits for Nintendo fell drastically compared to the results from the same quarter last year, plummeting 36% in total. The company’s net income from October to December was ¥29.1 billion (around £168m). The total lifetime sales of Wii U and 3DS have reached 12.6m and 57.94m respectively.
Splatoon and Super Mario Maker were predictably the Wii U’s biggest software sellers, now having combined lifetime sales of 7.4 million. The company’s financial forecast says that the company will “strive to maintain the attention level of Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, which are continuing to show steady sales, while introducing new titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD.” The forecast also reminded consumers of the imminent release of Nintendo’s first smartphone title Miitomo, set for launch in March, as well as announcing plans that the company will be expanding their amiibo range into 2016.
The fall in profits is a worrying sign for the release of the NX, which is expected to be formally announced this June at E3.
