Project Morpheus Brings VR To PlayStation 4

Virtuality. SegaScope 3D. Virtual Boy. The games industry’s flirtations with Virtual Reality have been littered with failures, mainly due to previous technological restraints on what could be possible.

However, the critical success of the Oculus Rift has opened up the potential to modern day virtual reality and has shown that the technology is so very closed to delivering what has been long promised.

Last night, Sony announced Project Morpheus, a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4 console, that works with the system’s PlayStation Camera and PlayStation Move accessories to provide an immersive gaming experience.

Unveiled ahead of next week’s Game Developers Conference, Morpheus also adopts a Sony-developed 3D audio system that can sound coming from the front, left, right and behind, as well as above and below the player.

Next week, the hardware will be demonstrated with CCP’s EVE Valkyrie, a special build of Square Enix’s recent Thief reboot, plus SCE’s very own The Castle, and The Deep.

Could Project Morpheus beat the Oculus Rift to it’s own game? Time will tell.
