A survey – which was conducted prior to Microsoft changed its policies on DRM – was conducted amongst European developers and the majority claimed they are working on PlayStation 4 titles, over other consoles. However, both PC and mobile eclipsed all home consoles.
Brought to our attention by IGN, 300+ EU members of the industry were questioned by GDC Europe on what systems they are and will be developing for. 13% revealed they are at work on PS4 titles, 9% are developing for Xbone and only 5% are currently hard at work on Wii U games. On top of that, 23% said they are planning to develop for Sony’s next console, with 14% looking at Xbox One as a platform for future games and 7% seeing the Wii U as a viable option.
Even with the excitement surrounding Sony and Microsoft’s next move, the majority said that mobile and PC games are where they’re headed. 66% of those surveyed stated that a mobile game would be their next, whilst 53% are looking to the PC as the home of their next release.
This shouldn’t surprise many, really. With development costs inflating at an alarming rate, smartphones, tablets and PCs appear to be studios’ best option.
