The obvious example of pirates in modern entertainment is Pirates of the Caribbean. However, even though it gained a lot of popularity, Ubisoft want to take Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag down a different route to that of Jack Sparrow.
Speaking with MCV, Ubisoft’s lead content manager Carsten Myhill said the French publisher want to make the general public look at pirates in a different light by toning down the slapstick nature of what we’ve seen in recent years;
“We’re staying away from cliches. Things like walking the plank, parrots on the shoulder and hooks for hands. We are giving pirates the HBO, reality treatment. And that allows us to redefine piracy in entertainment. No longer is it for kids.”
Myhill added that after the naval sections in Assassin’s Creed III – which turned out to be one of the more popular gameplay sequences from the game – fans wanted more and that’s what Ubisoft want to give their fans. “There’s no-doubt that the people want it.”, Myhill confirmed.
The “HBO treatment”, huh? Well, I honestly believe that people are interested in this new change of pace for the series, and hopefully, it will inject some vigour into the annualised series.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be released on November 1 in Europe and October 29 in North America for Windows PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii U and next generation consoles
