It looks like those plastic instruments in your living room will finally be put to bed, very soon. Over on the Rock Band forums, Harmonix have confirmed that, after 5 years, their weekly release of new Rock Band tracks will soon cease.
From April 2 and onward, there is nothing scheduled in terms of downloadable content for the mecca of music games. To cushion the blow for those Rock Band diehards that are still out there, there is a 50% sale on over 1,100 of the songs within the 4,000 strong library. In the forum post, the reasoning for them pulling the plug on weekly DLC is simple;
“…in recent months we’ve scaled production down as we’ve transitioned resources onto other projects. With several new titles in development and developers needed to usher these new games along…”
At the risk of becoming a broken record – the next generation is fast becoming a reality as we near Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Meeting and Microsoft’s eventual reveal of forthcoming hardware, therefore this type of announcement should neither shock, not surprise.
Harmonix have become the top dog in terms of music based games in this generation and I’m sure whatever they have going on for the next go-around will re-invigorate the genre, once more.
