Nintendo Announces Wii U Sales Figures for North America

by on January 11, 2013

Nintendo-NPD-NumbersNintendo of America have decided that the Wii U has sold sufficiently well to be deemed a success.

With just over a month since the North American release of the Wii U, the new console has now sold just under 890,000 units, which isn’t bad at all. As you’d expect, New Super Mario Bros. U sold very well too, with over 580,000 copies sold, which means it had an attach rate of around 65%.

Of course, these figures don’t match up to the Wii itself, which sold incredibly well as we all know.

Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing had this to say:

While the Wii launch established new benchmarks in the United States, Wii U has surpassed its predecessor in perhaps the most important category: revenue generation. The demand for the Deluxe SKU, which was essentially sold out at retail this holiday, and the strong attach rate of New Super Mario Bros. U, shows that we have the value and the games to drive momentum in 2013. We look forward to offering great new experiences and bringing smiles to millions of new faces throughout the year.

The 3DS continues to do well, selling 1.25 million units in December, which makes the lifetime sales in North America 7.7 million 3DS consoles – and people say handheld gaming is dying?

Xbox 360 was still the best selling console (for the 17th straight month, apparently), indeed, NPD say that that “2012 culminates a year where Xbox 360 dominated hardware sales”.

The top selling game of 2012 (in North America) was Black Ops II, with Madden NFL and Halo 4 behind it.
