Two Ways to Fight the Madness in the New Dead Space 3 TrailerWhile the gaming world in general had its reservations about the inclusion of co-operative multiplayer in a Dead Space title, this latest trailer helps to alleviate those fears.

The single player campaign is as deeply disturbing and psychologically frightening as you’d expect it to be, but the drop-in/drop-out online co-op changes things by adding unique story elements that will be only present when playing with someone else. So if you want to go it alone as long-suffering technician-turned-Necromorph-slayer Isaac Clarke, you can. Or you can bring in a second player as Sergeant John Carver, a man battling against severe dementia who sees horrific things that may or may not be there.

Madness is a strong theme in the Dead Space franchise and Carver’s relationship with the slightly-less damaged Clarke is an integral part of the co-op element. While we’re still worried that the threequel could be moving even closer to action – and thus further away from the straight up horror of the original – the option to play the whole game with or without a second player, and have that player’s presence or absence directly affect the story, is intriguing.

Check out the trailer below for a sneak peak at both modes.

Dead Space 3 will be released in Europe on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC on February 8 2013.
