God of War Greek trilogy remake confirmed, Sons of Sparta out now
Sony used Thursday’s State of Play presentation to deliver two announcements tied to the 20th anniversary of God of War: confirmation that a remake of the original Greek trilogy is in early development and the surprise release of a new 2D action platformer, God of War: Sons of Sparta, available now on PlayStation 5.
The trilogy remake was revealed with a logo during the presentation. No gameplay footage was shown, and no release date was announced. Sony Santa Monica Studio stated that the project is in early development and that it will be some time before additional updates are shared. The studio described remaking the Greek saga as one of the most frequent fan requests and expressed appreciation for the continued interest in seeing the original games return.
The Greek trilogy began with God of War in 2005 on PlayStation 2. A sequel followed two years later, and God of War 3 launched in 2010 for PlayStation 3. These three games established Kratos’ story in the Greek era.
The State of Play segment included an appearance by TC Carson, who originally voiced Kratos in those Greek-era entries. Carson confirmed the projects and is involved in both. His participation represents his first return to the role in more than a decade.
“We’re thrilled to confirm that the original God of War trilogy is being remade – and what better way to announce it than with the legendary TC Carson who brought Kratos to life in the Greek saga,” Santa Monica Studio said.

Immediately following the remake announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sony Santa Monica Studio released God of War: Sons of Sparta on the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 5. The project was developed by Mega Cat Studios in partnership with Santa Monica Studio and is described as a 2D action platformer and a passion project from the retro-focused indie developer.
Sons of Sparta presents a canon story set during Kratos’ youth, specifically during his harsh training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. The narrative centers on duty, honor, and brotherhood. The script was written by the Santa Monica Studio team responsible for God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. TC Carson reprises his role as the adult version of Kratos and narrates the story.
Gameplay adapts the series’ combat to a side-scrolling format. Kratos fights using a spear and shield and utilizes divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus. The enemy roster includes classic foes recreated in 2D with hand-drawn pixel animation, along with new creatures inspired by lesser-explored aspects of Greek mythology, developed by Mega Cat Studios.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is available in two editions on PlayStation 5. The Standard Edition is priced at USD 29.99, EUR 29.99, GBP 24.99, and JPY 3,480. The Digital Deluxe Edition costs USD 39.99, EUR 39.99, GBP 32.99, and JPY 4,480, and includes additional in-game items and extras.
The anniversary activities also include merchandise releases, a special art gallery, and a limited-edition DualSense controller released in October.
