Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix have released gameplay footage for the opening level of Marvel’s Avengers. You’ll be able to see Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow and Thor take on Taskmaster and his mercenaries. You’re also treated to a Hero tutorial showing off each Avengers powers.
I’m trying not to get hung up on the fact that Spiderman, and even Hawkeye, aren’t present for an Avengers game but I’ll deal. Grudgingly.
Marvel’s Avengers is a story-driven, third-person action adventure-adventure game that sees the superheroes in an original cinematic single-player campaign. If you’re unfamiliar with the story let me take you on a brief journey. The Avengers are showing off their new building and toys, likely funded and made by the tech billionaire Tony Stark, when the party is well and truly crashed. Cue the massive destruction and casualties involved in a superhero fight with the blame ultimately landing on the Avengers. This causes them to disband and for superheroes to become outlawed.
We jump 5 years into the future and the proverbial stuff has hit the fan. Earth’s only hope is the Avengers who must reassemble and save the world. As any superhero worth their salt should do.
On top of the solo campaign there are also online missions. You can choose to tackle these on your own or with friends. Cue the arguments over who will be what Avenger.
There’s also some customisable options for each Avenger to harness each power to help you defend the world.
Marvel’s Avengers will release simultaneously on PC, PS4, Stadia and Xbox One on May 15, 2020.
