Hisayoshi Kijima, the UI and mecha designer at PlatinumGames for NieR: Automata has posted a long detailed article on the UI for Automata and its evolution.

Videogame UI is something that is rarely discussed. I talked to John Hardin of Atlus USA at the time about Atlus’ UI and you can read it here. Recently there’s been a lot of discussion around Persona 5’s stunning menus and animations. Today, Hisayoshi Kijima discusses the UI in NieR: Automata. NieR: Automata is one of the best games of 2017. It looks pretty great across the board but the interface is consistently great. The full article is available here on the official PlatinumGames blog. Some interesting things of note are the influence of a musical score and Yoko Taro’s direction. He wanted a warm beige look and we see that but the UI is also modern and utilizes aspects of musical notes and scores very nicely. There’s even an influence from the original NieR UI felt. Here’s a video of them demonstrating the UI:

NieR: Automata is available on PlayStation 4 and PC.
