Variety have reported that Legendary Entertainment have acquired the rights to make the first ever live-action Pokémon movie, based around the character of Detective Pikachu.
Legendary has fast-tracked the film into production, which is set to start in late 2017. Detective Pikachu first appeared in Great Detective Pikachu, a 3DS title which launched in February this year that sees our favourite electric mouse take up a career in crime-solving. Great Detective Pikachu is only available in Japan, with a western release date now surely on the cards.
Variety also reports that Universal will handle the distribution of the film outside Japan as it has always done with Legendary movies, and Toho will handle the Japanese distribution.
