Square Enix Announces a Sundry of Dragon Quest Games for Japan

by on July 28, 2015

Square Enix had a live stream for a big Dragon Quest announcement earlier today.

In this event they announced various spinoffs and a new mainline game for the franchise.

While most Dragon Quest fans in the West have been annoyed by the lack of localizations on the 3DS front, I hope these newly announced games will make it outside Japan soon after release.

Notable announcements include Dragon Quest Builders, Dragon Quest Heroes II, Dragon Quest X on PS4, and Dragon Quest XI.

Dragon Quest Builders looks like a stylish version of Minecraft with a mix of Terraria and Dragon Quest thrown in to the fray.

It is set to release on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita.

Dragon Quest X, the MMO that was previously on Wii, 3DS, and PC, will be releasing on PS4.

Dragon Quest Heroes II, the sequel to Dragon Quest Heroes and is also releasing on all 3 PlayStation platforms in Spring 2016 in Japan.

Dragon Quest XI, a new mainline game in the franchise, was the biggest announcement of the event.

The platform choices are interesting as well.

It will be releasing on PS4 and 3DS with a possible release on Nintendo’s NX platform.

This choice may seem odd at first but makes complete sense.

The 3DS will ensure sales in Japan while a PS4 release will ensure sales in the West as these two are the most popular consoles in the respective regions.

Dragon Quest XI will be built on Unreal Engine 4 and it looks really nice.

The 3DS version will allow for both 3D and 2D visuals using both screens in a very interesting implementation.

Check out the amazing use of dual screens on the 3DS by Dragon Quest XI here.

None of these games have been confirmed for the West as of now but I’m really hopeful.

Thanks, Nova Crystallis.
