2K Australia to Close its Doors

by on April 16, 2015

There’s sad news coming out of Australia today, as Canberra based developer 2K Australia are closing down. The studio, which most recently developed Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and also worked on all three Bioshock games, is completely shutting down all employees will lose their jobs.

The reason given for the closure is that the cost of running a game studio in Australia is too high.

Apparently a move to Melbourne was being planned by 2K, in a last ditch attempt to help attract new talent. This allegedly caused many high-level members of the team to leave and that could possibly have factored into 2K’s decision to close the studio.

2K said on the matter:

“We can confirm we have taken steps to begin the studio closure process for 2K Australia in order to better manage ongoing development costs while improving the working proximity of our creative teams. We are very grateful for the team’s valuable contributions to numerous 2K projects, and are working with affected staff to explore reassignment opportunities where possible”

The closure leaves Australia with out a single AAA studio.

We wish everyone affected the best of luck for the future.
