Twitch Buys GoodGame Agency

by on December 10, 2014

Back in August Amazon purchased Twitch for a cool $970million, but now it’s the streaming companies to make an acquisition.

Twitch is set to acquire the GoodGame Agency, a talent and production agency that specializes in eSports work. The agency is also responsible for managing tournaments such as the Dota 2 League, which is set to conclude in Vegas in just over a month’s time.

This may seem like a run of the mill acquisition, but the really interesting part here is that the GoodGame Agency is also the parent company of both the Alliance and Evil Geniuses eSports teams. This means that Twitch now owns both the teams (across all the games they play.) Both parties have said that the acquisition will not change anything for the teams, or the agency for that matter, but it will be interesting to see if either of the teams benefit from the Twitch deal.

Kevin Lin, COO of Twitch had this to say about the purchase.

“GoodGame has an amazing reputation in the industry for its expertise in both sponsorship sales and talent support. Their passion for helping content creators and pro players achieve success has elevated the entire industry in the minds of brands worldwide,”

“GoodGame was a natural fit for Twitch because of our shared experience in creating compelling monetization opportunities for content partners and helping sponsors get the most out of their investments. We have worked with GoodGame CEO Alexander Garfield for several years, and there is a clear opportunity for him to bring his skills and experiences to many more of our partners.”

Then the man himself Alexander Garfield, CEO of GoodGame and one of the most important figures in the eSports industry said this (he actually said a lot more in a blog post, if your interested.)

“We view GoodGame as a conduit. Its purpose is to help support as many players and broadcasters as possible by channeling revenue into our community, and making sure it stays here. I can think of no better way to accomplish that goal than by working hand-in-hand with the very same platform whose passionate audience has essentially built our company. We wouldn’t have made it to where we are today without Twitch and its users – we’re excited to give back.”

This news marks the end of a big week for Twitch, with The Summit 2 tournament doing record numbers on the platform last weekend and the streaming giant announcing new features for its Xbox One app.
