After seven years of on and off development, Blizzard Entertainment have finally decided to pull the plug on their next-generation massively multiplayer online game Titan. In May last year, we heard how the game had been delayed until 2016 so that the studio could re-evaluate the project – but it seems like the title didn’t survive their new evaluation.
In a recent interview with Polygon, Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime confirmed the news, although he was eager to stress that Titan was never officially announced for a retail release. Although the title had been in development for such a long time, Blizzard simply felt that Titan was no longer the game that they wanted to be producing at this point in time.
In the interview he goes on to discuss previous cancelled Blizzard games – such as Warcraft Adventures and StarCraft Ghost – and how these cancellations didn’t have a negative result, and instead allowed them to make their other games better. Their recent focus has also switched to smaller-scale projects like the wildly popular Hearthstone, and the studio have realised that they can still create top-quality titles on a smaller scale than their typical triple A efforts.
