Bethesda doesn’t want people to fork out two subscriptions to play The Elder Scrolls Online on Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Currently, the way things are set-up, that’s what will have to happen.
A week ago, it was revealed that the MMORPG would be using the arguably dated method of subscriptions, with players having to pay $14.99/€12.99/£8.99, every single month. With Xbox Gold and PlayStation Plus confirmed as requirements for next-gen multiplayer, this makes ZeniMax Online’s title a bit unappealing to many. Thanks to CVG for bringing the following to our attention.
Marketing manager at Bethesda, Pete Hines, and lead gameplay designer Nick Konkle, spoke with OXM on the matter and said that they are trying to address the issue with Microsoft:
“We have been in talks with Microsoft about that very thing, and seeing whether or not there’s any room to change their minds about that, for folks who are only playing The Elder Scrolls Online and don’t want to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription, just to pay for the Elder Scrolls Online. The answer right now is that’s the way it works, but it’s something that we’re aware of and we keep pushing on, to see if there’s something that can be done.”
A spokesperson at Bethesda also spoke with USgamer about PlayStation Plus and the fact that The Elder Scrolls Online is facing a similar issue on PlayStation 4
It’s good to see that they’re actively trying to figure out some workaround with Sony and Microsoft on the matter, because it makes playing The Elder Scrolls Online, doubly difficult on wallets. Of course, they are doing this for their own benefit because I’m sure interest and, in turn, sales would increase if PS Plus/Xbox Live Gold wasn’t a requirement to play the game on either PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
