Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed to IGN that Nintendo’s recently announced free-to-play game will be Steel Diver.
Yes, Steel Diver, that new IP Nintendo that served as a launch title for the 3DS in 2011.
Revealed at E3 last week during a fiscal meeting, it was said the FTP game would not be set in the Mario or Pokémon worlds. Still, it being Steel Diver is certainly an unexpected turn of events.
Miyamoto said:
“There is something we’re doing with the Steel Diver idea that I think is going to open things up with that game… It’s going to be very fun. We’re exploring from a perspective of where we can take that from a multiplayer standpoint – it’s going to have this four-player battle mode that I think is going to be very interesting.”
The free-to-play game is expected to be released within the financial year, ie. before March 2014. We’re expecting it to serve as an experiment for the company, which would explain why they’re not risking a larger franchise on an untested model.
