In an interview with Polygon, Microsoft Studios’ own Phil Spencer confirmed that a Rare Xbox One game will be shown to the public and press at this year’s E3.
Spencer said that the veteran UK developer is still an important part of Microsoft’s first party plans:
“Fans of Rare and Rare IP I think will be pleased with what we’re going to show at E3. We had a limited amount of time today and a lot of story to tell. But Rare remains an incredibly important part of our development capability. That historic IP that they’ve built I think can play a real important role on Xbox One.”
After acquiring Rare in ’02, many fans have seen the studio go down-hill. Seemingly reduced to the fun-yet-throwaway Kinect Sports, Rare’s back catalogue reads like a Top 50 List of video games. There are rumblings of a new Viva Pinata game, or possibly a return to the Killer Instinct franchise. Either way, I think we’re all hoping for something a bit meatier from the studio.
