I’m sure it’s with a heavy heart that Bossa Studios have today announced that their lead designer Mike Bithell has left the developer. The man, who is most famous for indie hit Thomas Was Alone, joined the studio in February of 2011 and worked on BAFTA winning Monstermind, along with the Facebook Merlin game, is focusing on his own personal projects, going forward.
“A great deal of thanks needs to go to Bossa Studios, my now previous employer. They told me in my interview that I needed to continue with the [Thomas Was Alone] project while working there, they supported me through development, and gave advice and support throughout and after release. Awesome people it’s going to be sad to step away from. So, next Monday I’ll start a new Unity file, and see where it takes me. Thanks for the time and kindness you’ve given me so far in my adventures and fingers crossed you’ll be there to play the next thing”
In a nice show of support, CEO at Bossa Studios Henrique Olifiers said;
“While I am sad to lose such a talented member of the team, I am extremely proud to see Mike go his own way. Creating Thomas in his spare time was an unbelievable achievement and I have every faith that this is just the beginning for him.”
Thomas Was Alone is a game that has eluded me. I know that many will think that is an injustice, and one I’m looking to set right in the near future. The fact that a game consisting of merely blocks brought out such an emotional response from the gaming public is a testament to Bithell’s talent.
Thomas Was Alone is available now for Windows PC and Mac.
