Gearbox Have Plans to Raise Borderlands 2’s Level Cap by “Quite a Few Levels”There’s good news for Borderlands 2 players who have already hit the XP ceiling in Gearbox’s loot-crazy FPS, as James Lopez, an associate producer for the game, has revealed to OPM that there are plans to increase the level cap by “quite a few levels which will allow you to play for quite a bit longer.”

Whether the change will come in patch-form or as part of the expected 4th DLC expansion due as part of the Season Pass is unclear, though Lopez did confirm that Gearbox “has a plan for Q1.” With Q1 ending on March 31st, we can safely expect the next slice of DLC, and the level cap increase, in the next few months.

The reason Gearbox have waited so long appears to be a simple case of data-correlation. Using the SHiFT codes to track stats has been an invaluable tool. Lopez explains: “With Borderlands 1 we had to go by forum posts, checking out the number of times certain achievements had been unlocked, but SHiFT allows us to see a lot more about the way players are playing the game, and see what they’re doing.”

For those unclear about SHiFT codes, they are download keys dealt out by Gearbox that afford players with golden keys with which to open special loot chests in Borderlands 2. They can be used by multiple players for as long as they remain active, which is usually for about 3 hours after they go live. Most importantly, they allow Gearbox to track vital stats about the players using them.

The third DLC pack, Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt went live this week, transporting the player to the continent of Aegrus, there to hunt down the meanest and nastiest of Pandora’s wildlife on behalf of gentleman hunter Sir Hammerlock. There is still one more add-on due as part of the Borderlands 2 Season Pass, and Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has promised long-term support for the loot-based shooter.

Borderlands 2 is available now on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC. Our review of the Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt DLC will be live over the next few days.
