Whether you loved or hated the divisive Final Fantasy XIII, the story of Lightning and Snow and company and their quest to free Lightning’s sister from becoming a lump of crystal for all eternity arguably boasted one of the series’ better plots. The first half’s strict linearity was the main bone of contention upon which the gaming public gnawed, a problem later addressed by Final Fantasy XIII-2‘s more free-form approach.
The trilogy is set to conclude next year with the latest instalment, Lightning Returns, bringing back the ass-kicking protagonist of the original game and making her the star of the show. In a rare move for the franchise, Lightning will be the only playable character, eschewing the party-based norm to focus purely on her awesomeness. Characters such as Snow Villiers and Hope Estheim will return, too, with fresh new outfits and, we expect, new problems.
The latest trailer released by Square-Enix shows off some of the gameplay, as well as Lightning’s mean new attire, and reveals minor story details to boot. What we know is that it’s set several hundred years after the merging of Gran Pulse and Valhalla at the end of FFXIII-2, and Lightning has been freed from her crystal prison to save the world from destruction when the Sea of Chaos swallows the islands of Novus Partus.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released in 2013 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
