Notch Releases Early Footage of 0x10c
It’s been a long time coming, but Markus “Notch” Persson has finally released the first draft of the art test and some dynamic lighting for his upcoming game, 0x10c.
Originally announced back in April, the game takes place in 1988 and the space race has never ended. Notch has stated in an interview with PC Gamer, that 0x10c is a mix between cult TV show Firefly and BBC Micro game, Elite. The game is very user friendly, allowing players to program their spaceship’s 16-bit brain to their own liking. With spaceships, things have a tendency to go wrong – it is a big piece of metal in space, after all – and in 0x10c, Mojang want that, as Tobias Möllstam says.
“I’d really like for stuff to go wrong. But I think we’ve managed to establish a philosophy where things can go wrong and we’re not going to judge too much. Like you run something at 120 per cent and catches fire, but you just about make it. It’s kind of cheesy but I like it. Having a programmable and customisable ship means that there’s a lot more investment, and the game should reflect that and allow you to have it for a long time.”
The game is still in the very early stages and Notch himself admits that “I need to figure out what is actually a fun game mechanic in all of this”. Multiplayer will also be added “as soon as it’s fun”. There’s a long way to go with this yet and it’s hard to say whether lightning will strike twice for Mojang, but never say never.
