id Celebrate 20 Years of Wolfenstein 3D – Try it Now in Browser! This week marks the 20th anniversary of the release of seminal first person shooter Wolfenstein 3D, a game considered by just about everybody to be the granddaddy of all first person shooters. It may not have been the first game to put a gun in your hand and get frisky with the 3D, but it was the title that laid down a whole bunch of FPS fundamentals that we take for granted today.

To celebrate this 20 year milestone, the games original creators, Id software, have released a browser version of the game, which you can check out for yourselves here. If you have never played Wolf’ 3D before, we heartily recommend you follow that link, as the game is still a good crack 20 years on. Yes it may look dated (that’s an understatement) and the gameplay may be a bit simple by today’s standards, but the core of what makes an FPS title fun to play is there for all to see – guns, Nazis, blood, death. Winning combination.

One of the brilliant minds behind Wolfenstein 3D, John Carmack, has also taken the time to talk about his experiences of developing the game. He talks of a time when making video games was a process completed in around 3 months, rather than 3 years, and for those of you interested in software development some of his comments are fascinating. You can check out the video below, and be sure to let us know your memories of Wolfenstein 3D in the comments section, below.
