First Batch of Game Gear Games Arrive on 3DS and Virtual Console This Week
Ahhh the Sega Game Gear. Anyone remember this beast? It was Segas only major foray into the handheld market, and what a beast it was. This giant, liver shaped monster of a handheld was a BIG deal when it was released back in 1991. It was the first handheld to feature a backlit , COLOUR screen. Yeah, thats right, you can keep you monochrome gameboy, thanks.
These days it is Nintendo that is still pumping out the hardware, and today they have announced what three Game Gear games will be getting the Virtual Console treatment.
First up, it’s the Sonic game no one ever played (probably) – Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, in which Sonic and Tails must race against Knuckles and Nack the Weasel across Mobius to collect up all of the chaos emeralds that the fiendish Dr. Robotnik made a mess of in another one of his zany experiments. This one must have taken place before the good doctor turned into an egg.
Next up is Shinobi, a classic side scrolling hack and slasher, in which you control a Ninja and must defeat upwards of a BILLION bad guys. This one is a classic.
And the final game from Game Gear land is Dragon Crystal, an old school RPG that takes place in labyrinths, deserts.. you know, the usual. Solve puzzles and defeat enemies, level up, do the RPG thing, Game Gear style – in COLOUR!
Also out this week on 3ds and Dsi are puzzler Hints Hunter, while Mega Man 5 makes its way to the Wii Virtual Console. This lot is penned for release “this week”, which usually means Wednesday in Nintendo land.
Go forth and Game Gear my friends, for it is the future.
