Development Giants Halfbrick, the creators of games such as Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, have combined with Spry Fox, the studio behind flash and iOS sensation Steambirds to deliver the next instalment, Steambirds: Survival.

That’s not even the best part. It’s going to be free!

Steambirds: Survival is a turn-based aerial combat game centered around a war-torn steampunk world. Players will take on the role of an elite Allied pilot and stand their ground to defeat endless waves of Axis enemies. Their goal: to help UK citizens evacuate before the Axis Armada obliterates their homes.

“Steambirds: Survival is the ultimate dog-fighting tactical aerial combat game,” said Phil Larsen, Chief Marketing Officer for Halfbrick. “The game showcases the talents of both Halfbrick and Spry Fox and delivers an experience that is sure to be another huge hit among iOS players.”

Steambirds: Survival will feature eight high-flying aircrafts and 64 expansive missions at launch – with several free updates scheduled to be released soon after. Each aircraft in the game has its own unique strengths and weaknesses, which will force players to think strategically to conquer their Axis opponents. Players must also collect power-ups, dropped by downed enemy aircrafts, which are the key to their survival.

Released in December 2010, the original Steambirds has been both a critical and commercial success, having been played by over 12 million players worldwide.

Sound good? It looks pretty good too. This handy little trailer should prove such a point.

Steambirds: Survival will be available early October for iOS. You can also play it now online.
