Apple’s App Store Passes 15 Billion Downloads
Apple has today announced that over 15 billion Apps have been downloaded from its App Store. The mammoth figure has been achieved in less than three years as the App Store nears its third birthday, which is in just three days time.
Over 200 million iOS devices sold has helped Apple reach this rather dizzy height, with customers having over 425,000 Apps to choose from. The store is not just making money for Apple, either. Over $2.5 billion has been paid out to developers since the store opened in 2008.
“In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in the press release.
One example of a barnstorming success in the App Store is Epic’s Infinity Blade, which according to VG247, has surpassed the $11 Million sales barrier in just over six months.
In the past, Apple has released this information during a Keynote for new hardware, but the usual July launch of a new iPhone hasn’t happened this year, as rumours circulate that the company is set to release its iPhone 5, or 4S, in September this year.
