Square Enix Announce New Downloadable Side Scroller From The Mind Behind Strider Hiryu

by on May 4, 2011

In great news for fans of the original, Squenix have today announced the release of a new game brought to you from the geezer behind Capcom’s legendary Strider, a character who received a wicked PlayStation/arcade sequel in the early noughties, but has not been seen much since. And while Hiryu is not involved in it, Moon Diver looks like a sterling old-school style romp, packed with features and some design work from former artists at Tatsunoko. Can’t bloody wait to try this one out! Read on for more on this one…..

London (4th May 2011) – Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of SQUARE ENIX® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces its popular digital release Moon Diver™ is now available for the Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, downloadable for 1200 Microsoft Points.

Developed for both the Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation®Network, Moon Diver delivers frenetically fast-paced gameplay and a classic side-scrolling perspective for up to four players locally or via online cooperative play.

Developed by feelplus inc., Moon Diver was created by Koichi Yotsui, the visionary game designer behind one of the most iconic arcade action games of the last two decades, Strider®. While Moon Diver certainly pays homage to its side-scrolling ancestor with hordes of enemies and gigantic bosses, the game innovates in a number of ways, including entirely modern three-dimensional graphics; a dynamic and intuitive character experience and levelling system; four-player local and online co-op with the ability to instantly drop in and out.

Moon Diver also features a number of unique, selectable, upgradeable and cooperatively combinable character special abilities called “MoonSault Combinations”, which can dramatically alter the field of play at any moment – from powerful area-of-effect attacks to critical passive power boosts to simple, yet effective, invisibility.

Such a sound looking frolic wouldn’t be the same without a mental plot, and this does not disappoint from the press release:

At the dawn of the 22nd century, an evil power brought inanimate objects to life, and they turned on humanity. Bridges, automobiles, cities – the whole of humanity’s creations were all compelled to turn on their makers. Mankind’s fears of apocalypse became reality!

Hidden amongst humanity’s survivors, an elite unit of specially trained ninja known as Moondivers has been lying in wait for orders to reclaim the planet.

Today, those orders arrived. Today, the battle to retake Earth begins.
