Nintendo crack down on piracy

by on August 4, 2009

Now we all know piracy is bad for the industry we love so much and represents a big problem to it everyday. Even though people are aware of this fact they still do it regularly probably thinking something along the lines of “I’ll just download this game and save myself £40, there can’t be any real repercussions for me, right? WRONG!

According to sources a 38 year old Japanese company employee Yoshiaki Asagiri was sentenced to two years in prison by the Kyoto District Court. He was apparently put on trial for the piracy of over a whopping 1000 Nintendo DS games (Wow that’s “dedication” for you) that were uploaded to his site. After stating that Asagiri’s crimes “Tramples on the efforts of the copyright holders” they also slapped him with a $96,000 fine (Ouch!).

In my personal experience there are a tonne of these sites polluting the Internet, especially when the Nintendo DS is involved. So the question is was this just a warning flare from Nintendo or are they planning to make this permanent occurance in an attempt to eradicate the scourge that is piracy from our beloved industry?! For the good of the industry, we certainly hope so.
