Blizzard’s unannounced massively multiplayer online RPG, codenamed Titan (nothing to do with Respawn Entertainment’s Project Titan), has been delayed until 2016.
GamesBeat reported that the team of 100 developers was reduced by 70, with those people assigned to other projects while the remaining team start over.
Citing a source close to the project, the news was soon confirmed by Blizzard spokesman Shon Damron who said:
“We’ve always had a highly iterative development process, and the unannounced MMO is no exception. We’’e come to a point where we need to make some large design and technology changes to the game. We’re using this opportunity to shift some of our resources to assist with other projects while the core team adapts our technology and tools to accommodate these new changes. Note that we haven’t announced any dates for the MMO.”
The 2016 target is rumour, as was the prior rumour born out of a leaked document which said the game would debut in 2014.
In 2011 Blizzard’s Chief Operating Officer told GamesBeat that the company’s leading developers were put on the project, saying:
“We have taken some of our most experienced developers and put them on [Titan]. We believe we have a dream team. These are the people who made World of Warcraft a success. We are going to blow people’s minds.”
Blizzard are famed for their long development process and high standards who while this news may irritate those hungry for a new Blizzard IP, it’s also a sign that the company want to do things right.
