A former developer at Gearbox, who today released Aliens: Colonial Marines, has revealed that most of the game was in fact developed elsewhere.
Comments made on a forum last year and unearthed by Superannuation tell of development being outsourced to TimeGate Studios.
The forum member “mugwurt” also said that Gearbox only really worked on the game’s multiplayer.
“Hate to say it,” wrote the ex-dev. “But I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high for Colonial Marines. I used to work at Gearbox, and the development of that game has been a total train wreck, going on what, six years now?”
“Gearbox isn’t even making the game, except for the multiplayer. Primary development was outsourced to TimeGate Studios, which has a less than stellar past.”
The game’s multiplayer is one of the few aspects of the game that critics have reacted to favourably.
This morning the embargo lifted and a flood of disappointing reviews hit the web including 5/10 from Edge and 3/10s from Eurogamer and Polygon.
TimeGate Studios have previously worked on downloadable shooter Section 8 and a few expansion packs for FEAR.
In addition to all this, PCGamesN reported today that whole sections of the game can be played without killing any aliens or even firing a gun.
