GAME Exit Adminstration as OpCapita Secure Retailer’s Future
Less than a week after going into Administration GAME has secured its future today following a successful bid from OpCapita.
OpCapita are responsible for turning around the fortunes of electronics retailer Comet, they now aim to do the same with GAME’s UK operations. No more store closures are expected, meaning the 333 stores that remain open will continue to trade for the foreseeable future. This of course means the 3200 people still employed by GAME will keep their jobs. GAME Group’s international operations are still up for sale.
OpCapita managing partner Henry Jackson had this to say:
“We are pleased to have reached agreement with the Administrator. We strongly believe there is a place on the high street for a video gaming specialist and GAME is the leading brand in a £2.8bn market in the UK.”
“There is a huge amount to do but we look forward to the challenge of restoring GAME’s fortunes in partnership with its employees and suppliers. This means that the GAME brand will not be another one of the retail names disappearing from the high street in the current difficult climate.”
So great news for everyone involved today, add this to the promise of tax breaks for the UK games industry and things are certainly looking a lot brighter going forward.
Let’s hope the retail chain is managed better from now on, and gaming can continue to have a prominent position in the UK high-street.
